Why we teach the ampersand, not the algorithm

The most important thing a child can learn about AI isn’t how it works — it’s how to stay in charge of it.

Ask most people what children need to learn about artificial intelligence and you tend to hear the same answer: how it works. Teach them the mechanics, the thinking goes, and the rest will follow. It is a tidy idea. It is also, we think, the wrong place to start.

A child does not need to understand a car engine to cross the road safely. They need to understand their relationship to the traffic. AI is no different. The foundation isn’t the maths behind it — it’s a posture: curious enough to use it, steady enough to stay in charge.

That matters because children are not waiting for permission. Ofcom now reports that half of 8–17-year-olds use AI tools, and a separate survey by Internet Matters found 64% of children use AI chatbots. The relationship is already forming, whether or not anyone is guiding it.

The two stories we’re told

Almost every headline about young people and AI resolves into one of two moods: fear or surrender. Either the machine is a threat to be locked out, or it is the future and resistance is pointless. Both share a hidden assumption — that the human and the machine are in a contest, and one of them has to lose. We reject that framing completely.

A child who can reason about AI is safer inside it — not because they fear it, and not because they trust it, but because they know how to stay in charge.

What the ampersand asks of a person

The symbol looks simple. Living up to it is not. The ampersand — the and in You & AI — asks a young person to hold two things at once: interest in what the tool can do, and the confidence to overrule it when their own judgement says otherwise. In practice that means:

  • Knowing enough about how AI produces answers to sense when it is likely to be wrong.
  • Treating what it produces as a draft to interrogate, never a verdict to accept.
  • Noticing the pull of tools designed to feel like a friend — and one Internet Matters found a third of child users already describe that way.
  • Keeping ownership of the final decision, and being able to explain how they reached it.

None of that requires understanding transformer architecture. It requires the same thing good teaching has always built: the habit of thinking for yourself, applied to a tool that is very good at thinking for you.

Why we start here

Get the relationship right and a child can meet whatever the technology becomes — and it will keep becoming something new. The specific tools in a ten-year-old’s life today will be unrecognisable by the time they leave school. The posture will not. That is why, when people ask us where to begin, we always point to the same place. Not the algorithm. The ampersand.
